Gettysburg

Quick links

On 31 May thru 2 June 2013 the Big Bears will be camping at Camp Conewego near Gettysburg and touring and hiking many of the sites Gettysburg National Park.

The Gettysburg camping trip is considered a family trip. Those friends and family that wish to come along and camp at a Boy Scout camp are welcome to join us. Bear in mind, Boy Scout camps are low on amenities. It is unlikely that we will have access to showers, flush toilets or receptacles for hair dryers. Families are welcome to take the Trolley Tour of Gettysburg but the scouts are restricted from the trolley tour unless they have been to Gettysburg twice previously. For the most part, the scouts will be participating in the Johnny Reb Hike on Saturday afternoon after the Gettysburg Visitor’s Center and tour of the Eisenhower estate. Hikers should have comfortable shoes and socks. Dress in layers because morning temperatures will be cooler than afternoon temperatures. Hikers should be prepared to bring water container(s) for the hike of this length. Boy Scouts should wear their Class-A uniform Saturday and Sunday.

Note about the hikes

DON’T ATTEMPT TO DO THE TEN-MILER WITHOUT THE PROPER TRAINING IN PREPARATION FOR A HIKE OF THIS LENGTH.

Make sure you do the prep for this trip, several segments of the Monmouth County Park System “Rockin the Trails” activity
(starts 4/15) include (2) supplemental 5-milers.
April 1 sunset at 7:20pm
May 1 sunset at 7:52pm

Consider getting the “Blue Card” to earn your hiking merit badge. The 10-miler Billy Yank could count as one of the 5 required
10-mile hikes. DON’T FORGET YOUR SCOUT ESSENTIALS LISTED BELOW!

A more challenging hike is being offered for Sunday after we break camp, the Billy Yank hike. It is 10 miles long and should take approximately 6 hours to complete with breaks and “scavenger hunt” like activities. If you have a homework pass, consider using it for Monday since we will likely only be getting back between 7:30 and 8, subject to weekend traffic.

We are asking that parents write their respective schools requesting permission to be excused at noon for this educational trip or use this letter from the Scoutmaster. We plan to meet at the VFW at 1pm and be on our way promptly at 1:30.

Scouts should have money for the Friday night Ghost tour and for souvenir shopping on Saturday afternoon before dinner. Tickets to the Visitor’s Center attractions and dinner at General Picket’s Buffet are included in the $50 you attached with your scout’s permission slip.

For the entire weekend schedule and other information, see the attached Gettysburg flier
